Our vision

Ordenamiento Territorial del Partido de Balcarce

Rural land-use planning is a participatory and dynamic process of organization of land use and occupation of rural areas in terms of their ecological, environmental, socioeconomic, cultural and institutional characteristics in order to promote sustainable development. In the allocation of uses, land-use planning must consider the potentials and limitations of each environment to support various human activities, distribute them evenly in space and ensure critical sustaining ecosystem functions as the provision of clean water, soil protection, landscape quality and biodiversity. Rural land-use planning considers not only primary production activities (agriculture, livestock, forestry) but also other values of rural areas with spatial expression, both economic, cultural, and environmental. Active stakeholder participation is essential in the process of rural land planning-use to consider the multiplicity of their visions, needs and aspirations.

The GEAP, along with other members of INTA and CONICET, held workshops in 2017 with local stakeholders within the framework of the Management Committee of the UNESCO Reserve "Parque Mar Chiquito" in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The aim of these workshops was to provide tools to help set up a management plan for the reserve, from a participatory governance approach, that is, a planning of the area in which all the social actors that depend on the reserve to survive and carry out tasks of tourism, recreation, education and research are involved. The workshops were conducted through the ARDI process (Michel Etienne, Derick R. Du Toit, Sharon Pol, 2011), which is a co-construction method for the participatory modelling of management of natural resources. Within this process of workshops it was possible to recognize that the problems that are associated to the Reserve is the degradation of the wetland. As far as we could observe, it is the actors, resources, processes and interactions that lead to further degradation of the wetland. It is important to take this into account for the sustainable management of the area.
