The Tandilia Network is a space for exchanging knowledge and experiences on issues related to nature conservation in the Tandilia System, province of Buenos Aires. The Network arises from the need to share research lines and gather in a common platform information that is often dispersed or only accessible to researchers related to each of the topics. It offers an important communication channel between different stakeholders in the territory, facilitating new connections between interested people and promoting a dialogue of knowledge based on the socialization of knowledge. Educators, researchers, students, decision makers, among other actors, can benefit from this space for interaction, where we also hope, through this synergy, to promote joint work and identify information gaps that allow us to collaboratively generate new actions in research, management and education for conservation.

The website Vulnerable Socio-Ecosystems is intended for public awareness and dissemination of the threats facing communities and the ecosystems with which they interact due to different drivers of change and their adaptation strategies. Under the premise that science and art have synergistic roles in human understanding and awareness of the world, our proposal is based on the visual impact of photographic art, accompanied by short texts accessible to the non-academic public and maps that guide interpretation. The site seeks to make visible the socio-environmental problems that affect the communities, breaking with the indifference that contributes to aggravating them and encourages people to think of ways to solve them.
Members of GEAP delivered this proposal through a immersive experience during the event "The Future is Science" carried out in July 2019 at the Museun of Contemporary Art (MAR) of Mar del Plata.
In the last century, scientific research focused on developing technologies that increase food production. Thus, an unprecedented global reduction in large-scale famines was achieved. However, food production has an impact on the natural resources on which it depends and, at the same time, the excessive use of inputs generates contamination, jeopardizing both human health and the natural processes on which the production systems depend. It is in this context that a range of proposals arises aimed at solving this enormous and complex problem, which range from sustainable intensification to agroecology. Within this framework, members of the GEAP were invited to participate in round tables with other experts with different views on food production models. The events were held at the National University of Córdoba and at the conference "The Future is Science" held at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAR) in Mar del Plata.
Wild species in agricultural ecosystems are important to maintain key ecosystem functions. As part of different projects which objective are valuing species and the environments that harbor them we regularly offer presentations for farmers with whom we have worked along the years. We have already been at La Dulce (Necochea county), Azul and Olavarría. Along with the talk we distribute field guides and posters to stimulate bird watching as a sustainable recreational activity.
As part of the Fourth International Congress of Ecosystem Services in the Neotropics (CISEN4)
in September 2015 the documentary GRAN CHACO
was showed in the Espacio Cultural Unzué at Mar del Plata city. GRAN CHACO (produced by the Faculty of Agronomy of the Universidad
de Buenos Aires and directed by Lucas Van Esso) unmasks the socio-environmental conflicts that affect the largest woodland in the
world after Amazonia. The activity counted with the presence of the movie director and of renowned researchers, who presented their
research after the movie screening.
With the presence of more than 150 atendees, the debate turned on the role of the State, the society and academics over the conservation
of this important region.
In October 2013 we carried out a debate on "What do we know about geese?" at the Chacra Experimental Barrow in the city of Tres Arroyos, with 30 atendees, among them farmers and other social actors related to the subject. The talks were based on information collected during the years of the study. Thus, we designed interviews with farmers with the objective of assessing the perception and valuation of geese species as biological heritage in the counties San Cayean San Cayetano, Tres Arroyos and Necochea, Buenos Aires province. In addition, we planned the interviews to be conducted in San Cayetano, Necochea, Tres Arroyos, Villarino, Carmen de Patagones and Púan under the frame of the above mentioned project. During the workshop, we worked on the comprehension of the farmers perception of the species under study and the prefered control strategies to decrease damages to crops, which is crucial for the management of conflicts between wild fauna and agricultural production. As the information on the biology of geese species is scarce and, specifically, there are no assessments of the existence and magnitude of damages that these birds produce on agricultural systems, we conducted a debate on this topic which produced an interchange of information that will be useful for future decison making. This last workshop open to stakeholders allowed us to communicate the problem with geese associated to their valuation as capital natural and current status as plague.
The GEAP, in coordination with professionals from INTA and the FCA, and neighbors, is organizing a series of workshops aimed at farmers and the community in the mountainous area of the Tandilia System. The objectives of these meetings are: 1) To build a space for exchange, reflection and dialogue with different stakeholders of the territory to share ecological, geological and cultural values of the mountain environments of the Tandilia System; 2) To identify environmental problems, their causes and consequences, and ways of acting in a transdisciplinary way to mitigate them; 3) To share experiences and tools for the productive management of the mountain environments. We understand that dialogue and commitment are the basis for a change towards the common good.)
This work is a collaborative process carried out by farmer associations such as the Chacha Sachayoj and the CREA Sachayoj Group, the Rural Extension Agency (AER) of INTA in Sachayoj, the Quimilí Agricultural Experimental Station of INTA and the GEAP. The objective is to co-design a monitoring system for environmental management indicators of farms, in response to demands from farmers to know and monitor the productive and environmental performance of their activities. The co-design of an indicator monitoring system consists of the generation of agreements between the parties involved (farmers, extension agents and researchers) about what for and how to track the biophysical processes that are most affected by the management practices and whose changes are important for the sustainability of agricultural production. The monitoring system implies that the technical advisers of the farmers groups will coordinate the registration and systematization of the information on the environmental management indicators of the farms they advise, who will centralize this information for further analysis by the researchers, who will be responsible for communicating to the groups and farmers the results of the analyzes in a synthetic and periodic way. Farmers will have information on the productive and environmental performance of their activity, which allows them a continuous improvement of their management.
The GEAP, along with other members of INTA and CONICET, held workshops in 2017 with local stakeholders within the framework of the Management Committee of the UNESCO Reserve "Parque Mar Chiquito" in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The aim of these workshops was to provide tools to help set up a management plan for the reserve, from a participatory governance approach, that is, a planning of the area in which all the social actors that depend on the reserve to survive and carry out tasks of tourism, recreation, education and research are involved. The workshops were conducted through the ARDI process (Michel Etienne, Derick R. Du Toit, Sharon Pol, 2011), which is a co-construction method for the participatory modelling of management of natural resources. Within this process of workshops it was possible to recognize that the problems that are associated to the Reserve is the degradation of the wetland. As far as we could observe, it is the actors, resources, processes and interactions that lead to further degradation of the wetland. It is important to take this into account for the sustainable management of the area.
Rodents in the rural areas cause problems by transmiting diseases like hantavirus, argentine hemorragic fever and leptospirosis. Their control by chemical means implies risks for rural populations, thus making it preferable to use biological control methods, like predation by barn owls (Tyto alba). By innitiative of a group of associates of Agricultores Federados Argentinos (AFA) we built and installed nest boxes to facilitate the colonization of barn owls in strategic places (home steads, barns, etc.). Students of secondary schools of Santa Fe province built twenty nest boxes and distributed them among members of the cooperative. Along with them, we are monitoring their occupation by barn owls in order to improve the design and assess the important service that these birds offer. This work is possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Education through its Secretary of University Policy and the cooperative Agricultores Federados Argentinos.
In 2014, as a result of a first contact with Dr Marcos Grigioni, we established a relationship whith the cooperative Agricultores Federados Argentinos (AFA) for the preservation of non-cultivated areas in farms, that can act as sources of biodiversity. We also built and installed nest boxes for barn owls, with the objective of controlling rodents that transmit hemorragic fevers. The initiative, that was originated by the motivation of the Women Group of the cooperative, is supported by the Ministry of Education. The work is carried out with a citizen science approach, where social actors participate in the process of research generating and collecting the information themselves, with the guide of members of GEAP.
The objective of this workshop was to participatively analyze the current situation of geese in Southern Buenos Aires province, with the aim to work in joint actions for their management. This workshop was a first aproximation where we worked along researchers, technical advisors of the public (INTA and CRII outreachers, etc.) and private sectors and farmers. The event was carried out on 23th Agoust 2016 the Cooperativa Agrícola Ganadera de Orense facilities, in the province of Buenos Aires. Sponsors: Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA), Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias de la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata.
